About the residence and city:
Maybeck was commissioned to build Wildwood Gardens for Frank C. Havens, a prominent real estate developer who was impressed with the architect's treatment of hillside sites. With the best building area located fifteen feet below the level of the access road, Maybeck approached this challenge by designing a plan that allowed entrance to the property at the second-story level. And although the original house has been extensively remodeled, none of the original charm and craftsmanship was lost in the process. It bears mentioning that Mrs. Havens was very fond of East Indian and Oriental design and artifacts, and when major remodeling project took place, East Indian craftsmen were brought in to assist with the effort. Intricate carvings, teak wood beams and surfaces, and countless Oriental touches including complete rooms were brought in, making Wildwood Gardens a true gem in one of the most beautiful locations in the Bay Area.
About Piedmont - History is everywhere in Piedmont, originally founded as a small community in 1877. With awe-inspiring views of the City of San Francisco and the Bay, it became home to the likes of Jack London, George Sterling and many more... Today, Piedmont remains one of the most desirable locations in the entire Bay Area. Located in close proximity to fabulous entertainment and dining options, Piedmont also offers its residents an excellent school district, beautiful parks and an abundance of world-class recreational choices. It is only a 5-15 minute walk to Piedmont Park: At the center of Piedmont both geographically and historically, Piedmont Park covers approximately 15 acres and contains a variety of recreational facilities. The east entrance to the park is at 711 Highland Avenue where large sloping lawns surround the city's Community Hall. This area also contains a Tot Lot for the city's smallest residents and two tennis courts. The remainder of the park is a natural glen with many pathways following the course of Bushy Dell Creek. A separate entrance to the park from Wildwood Avenue offers a scenic view of Witter Field at Piedmont High School and a panoramic vista of San Francisco Bay and Mt. Tamalpias. The community gathers at the park for annual Fourth of July festivities, concerts and holiday tree lighting in December.
